Giving back at the heart of Debby Dilks’ career at UMKC

According to her job title, Debby Dilks is a project manager and student advisor in the School of Computing and Engineering. According to the history books, though, she’s much more than that. During her more than 30 years at UMKC, Dilks has been a surrogate mother-of-the-groom in more than one student’s wedding. She’s been a de facto marriage counselor and a general life coach, too. And she has given tens of thousands of dollars — some 350 individual gifts — to support the school she’s come to love so much. Read more

UMKC alumna gives back with gift to honor a favorite professor  

Kathleen Orozco, Denver’s premier antiques appraiser and a 1973 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, is quick to point out that she wouldn’t be where she is if she hadn’t fallen in love with art all those years ago at UMKC. This spring she decided to say thank you with a $20,000 gift to the endowment of the Geraldine E. Fowle Art History Scholarship Fund. Read more

UMKC honors Miller Nichols with permanent video display

A new permanent display inside the lobby of the Miller Nichols Learning Center honors Miller Nichols, the philanthropist and civic leader for whom the university’s main library is named. The Miller Nichols Charitable Foundation funded the digital display, “A Tribute to Miller Nichols,” which features details about Nichols’ family, his business and his dedicated civic involvement. School of Pharmacy students raise money to remember former student

Members of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity at the UMKC School of Pharmacy raised more than $2,500 in donations at the group’s annual fundraiser, “Volley for Charity.” The sand volleyball event has been an annual tradition since 2002 when Kappa Psi members launched it as a way to help classmate Wes McIntire, who had cancer, cover medical bills. After McIntire died in 2005 the event continued as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and the Wes McIntire Scholarship endowment. Read More

Musical Bridges gives back by embracing talented students from the community

Musical Bridges, a  donor-supported community outreach program of UMKC's Conservatory of Music and Dance, is funded almost entirely through private gifts and grants. This inspiring program provides exceptional young musicians from underrepresented populations with intensive, one-on-one instruction and performance experience to prepare them for auditions at selective university programs.  Read More
