An Enduring Legacy Supports Special Education

Gwendoline Speyer was tenacious. A native of London, England, she began her career as a teacher in the London public schools during World War II. Passionate and dedicated, she held her classes in campus bomb shelters during air raids. The legacy of her commitment lives on through the Joseph and Gwen Speyer Scholarship fund at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Read more

An Indirect Path to Success

“It’s not unusual to have one of my kindergartners give me a hug after class and say, ‘I love you,’” says Rachael Townsend. A recipient of an Osher Reentry Scholarship, Townsend completed dual bachelor degrees, one in secondary education and one in biology and a minor in chemistry in May, 2016. She started teaching science to kindergartners through eighth graders at Lee A. Tolbert Community Academy this fall. Read more

The end of the fiscal year is always a time to look back and measure progress. We sort lists and compile numbers to create a snapshot of the significant relationships we’ve developed over the year. As you can see from the 2015-16 Annual Report which captures the completion of the Foundation’s first capital campaign and the $302 million it generated, we have a lot to celebrate. New Faces at the Foundation

Audrey Wishall is a sophomore majoring in communications at UMKC and is our new work-study grant writer. Audrey will be assisting in preparing of funding proposals, grant application, supporting documents and reports to secure and steward private, philanthropic support for various academic units and programs within the university.

Jewel Naraine is a junior majoring in business with an emphasis in marketing at UMKC and is our new work-study prospect researcher. Jewel will assist by helping to collect, organize, analyze, and record prospect data in support of fundraising activities. She will also be responsible for the completion of specific research projects and assisting with a variety of components of larger projects.
