The Miller Nichols Library project is central to UMKC’s strategic plan to expand the educational pipeline for Kansas City’s students and generate added revenue for UMKC by increasing its student population by 20 percent within the decade. This initiative will enable the University to add vital classroom space to meet this rising enrollment without adding classrooms elsewhere on the Volker campus.

The library, which opened in 1969, was intended to serve a student population of 6,000. Today, the facility is over capacity as UMKC’s enrollment totals more than 14,000. An expansion and renovation will provide space for collaborative interdisciplinary teaching, team-based student learning, library instruction, technology and multi-media equipment – each of which is fundamental to educating 21st century students.

Community and campus patrons also will enjoy amenities such as the new 300-seat lecture hall and covered parking structure. The $70 million expansion and renovation project will be funded through $20 million in private gifts, $20-25 million in campus funds and the remainder in state funds.
