    Pride Breakfast 2015

A collaborative initiative on behalf of the UMKC Divisions of Diversity and Inclusion,
Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, and Advancement

    Thursday, March 12, 2015

    7:30 - 9:00 am

UMKC Volker Campus  |  Swinney Recreation Center

    5030 Holmes

For the past six years, UMKC has hosted a Pride Breakfast to benefit the LGBTQIA Leadership Scholarship and the Pride Empowerment Assistance Fund at the university. The Fund is a critical resource that provides funds to LGBTQIA students who have been cut-off by their families due to coming out or being "outed."

The event has been a sold-out success, but on
March 12, 2015, the university plans to host an expanded Pride Breakfast like none of the years past. This event will not only be bigger in terms of attendance but for the first time will include a national-level speaker – Tony Kushner. We hope you can join us for what is sure to be an entertaining, inspiring and memorable event!

    Tony Kushner

Tony Kushner is an American playwright and screenwriter best known for his two-part epic play, Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. He wrote the screenplays for Mike Nichols’ film of Angels in America, and Steven Spielberg’s Munich. In 2012, he wrote the screenplay for Spielberg’s movie Lincoln. His screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award, and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award, Boston Society of Film Critics Award, Chicago Film Critics Award, and several others. He is also an accomplished author.

In “After Angels,” a profile of Tony Kushner published in The New Yorker, John Lahr wrote: “[Kushner] gives voice to characters who have been rendered powerless by the forces of circumstances – a drag queen dying of AIDS, an uneducated Southern maid, contemporary Afghans – and his attempt to see all sides of their predicament has a sly subversiveness. He forces the audience to identify with the marginalized – a humanizing act of the imagination.” The following are just some of the awards and honors that Tony Kushner has received:

    • Pulitzer Prize for Drama
    • Emmy Award
    • Two Tony Awards
    • Three Obie Awards (Off-Broadway Theatre Awards)
    • Arts Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters
    • PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theatre Award
    • Spirit of Justice Award from the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders
    • Cultural Achievement Award from The National Foundation for Jewish Culture
    • Chicago Tribune Literary Prize for lifetime achievement
    • 2012 National Medal of Arts

In September 2008, Tony Kushner became the first recipient of the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, the largest theater award in the U.S. He is also the subject of a documentary film, Wrestling with Angels: Playwright Tony Kushner, made by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Freida Lee Mock. He lives in Manhattan with his husband, Mark Harris.
